Medical Reserve Corps held a National Summit in Chicago, Il. Over 600 leaders from across the nation attended this 3 day event. MRCGKC was represented well by Dr. Sharon White-Lewis and Gail Hodges the unit leader and team leader for our MRC. Dr. White-Lewis presented on full scale exercises and was received well. We were recognized as a Training Innovator for making a difference with our Medical Reserve Corps Program.
One exciting speaker Christine Herron MD, discussed Good Samaritan responders who are at the scene of disaster before help arrives. She was volunteering at the Boston Marathon when the bombs went off. She described the heroism of the spontaneous responders and the devastating situation they found themselves in. Advocating for community responder training, she stated that there are 3 questions after spontaneous responders have experienced this kind of trauma. Did I do the right thing? Did I make a difference? What else could I have done? She stated that in speaking to others in similar situations, it doesn’t matter if you are an MD or a hot dog vendor – they all had the same 3 questions. Our MRCGKC will be planning to train, and educate the public to be able to spontaneously respond in disaster situations, natural or manmade. Be looking for future trainings.
