Required Training Courses
The Medical Reserve Corp of Kansas City believes that the success of our response to a large-scale public health event, such as a natural disaster or a bio-terrorism attack, depends on how quickly and effectively we can mobilize our trained MRC volunteers. In order to provide our partner organizations with trustworthy and dependably trained volunteers, our policy is that in order to be deployed at the time of a disaster, or to participate in any community event, an MRCGKC volunteer must have completed the four core training successfully, have been cleared with a background check and been interviewed by our Recruitment Committee.
MRCGKC volunteers are required to complete the four core training (Orientation, IS 909, IS 100, and IS 700) within 12 months of application for membership, so that they understand at an introductory level how disasters are managed, understand their role during a disaster, and understand how to protect themselves and those around them. MRCGKC wants to make sure that the volunteers who are deployed as our representatives complete at minimum the four training.
The core training classes are:
To sign up for these courses, go to the FEMA training website. Follow the instructions to create your individual FEMA SID and then complete the required training courses.
These training courses provide at an introductory level how disasters are managed, what the role of a volunteer is during a disaster, and how volunteers can protect themselves and those around them. This kind of training can be what separates the volunteers who "make a difference" from those volunteers who actually become part of the problem.
Training Reminder!
Volunteers can sign up for the training that they need to complete through an MRC-TRAIN account. Orientation is only offered in-class, before Full Corps meetings. IS-909, IS-100 and IS-700 are online classes only.

Recommended Training Courses
Other training that we highly recommend, but do not require, include:
- MRC TRAIN (an online program that allows you to register for an account, sign up for trainings and keep track of them)
- Functional and Access Needs Videos (nationally-recognized and developed by our own Corps, important for our volunteers to have these skills)
- Psychological First Aid (important course for anyone in a disaster situation to understand their own, and the public's reaction to a disaster)
