Why Should I Volunteer? 

You've worked hard in your career to master a variety of skills - in medicine, public health, safety, logistics, technology, communications, transportation, or a number of other areas.  Volunteering with the Medical Reserve Corps is a simple and effective way to use and improve those skills while helping to keep your family, friends, and neighbors safe and healthy.  For example, you may put those skills to use during an emergency or while providing some services for the most vulnerable members of your community.

Volunteering can give the great satisfaction of helping others.  For many individuals, volunteering gives them a sense of purpose and meaning in their lives.  It helps to broaden their social networks, providing social interactions with fellow volunteers while supporting an important activity in the community.  Interacting with others with common interest is a great way to create new relationships.  

Volunteering can also have a significant effect on your own health.  Research shows that those who volunteer have lower mortality rates, greater functional ability and lower depression rates later in life than those who do not volunteer.  


What Would I Do as a Volunteer?

MRCGKC volunteers, age 18 and older, train in order to improve their skills, knowledge and abilities.  Sometimes the training is coursework, and other times it is a part of a drill or exercise conducted with partner organizations in the community.  

Many MRCGKC volunteers assist with activities to improve public health in their community.  The Medical Reserve Corps of Greater Kansas City seeks to educate the community about personal disaster preparedness as well as supporting the health departments' immunization programs.   We assist our community partners with drills and exercises and provide certified First Aid care when requested.  

In the event of a large-scale public health emergency in the Kansas City area, our volunteers are trained and ready to assist and support the existing public health infrastructure.  The specific role that you will play and the activities in which you will participate will depend upon your background, interests and skills, as well as the needs of our unit and the Kansas City community.  

What the Medical Reserve Corps Expects of Members:
  • Members must help MRCGKC maintain accurate and up-to-date contact information, including mailing addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses.
  • Members must be willing to respond to an emergency in the Kansas City area on short notice, both during and after normal work hours or on weekends.
  • When deployed, unit members should have their own transportation to the staging site and may have to work under stressful conditions in austere environments.
  • Members must also be willing to work as part of a specialized team and regularly attend membership meetings as well as training and exercises.
  • Members must be willing to complete training in core competencies.
  • Unit members must conduct themselves in a manner that instills the trust and confidence of the public and the emergency services community.

Information from your application will be added to a secure, central database of member contact information and qualifications. This database is maintained by the State of Missouri Show-Me Response.

How Do I  Apply ?

​1.  ​Go here to fill out an initial application on Volgistics. 

2. Register (or update) your certifications and qualifications through Show Me Response. 
  • ​​​Click on the "Organizations" tab, then click on "All Organizations" in the black bar. Find the MRCGKC in the list, and click "Join."
  • Click on the “Occupations” tab, enter your medical license information. This is how we verify your credentials​. If you do not have any medical licenses, still sign up with MRCGKC in Show Me Response. ​ ​
3. If you live in Kansas or have a Kansas medical license, please also register (or update) K-SERV. ​​
  • Choose “Greater Kansas City MRC” from the list of MRC organizations.
  • ​Enter your main Kansas medical license under “Primary License” information.
